In the latest effort to encourage development using its CUDA general-purpose GPU programming interface, Nvidia has donated $500,000 to the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (UIUC). This donation comes with the title, "CUDA Center of Excellence," which Nvidia says UIUC is the first to receive.
This isn't Nvidia's first donation to UIUC. Last year, the company gave the university an $800,000 CUDA cluster made up of 32 QuadroPlex model 4 systems each containing two graphics processors. Nvidia donated the system to support UIUC's Theoretical and Computational Biophysics Group, which it says was "one of the first research groups to leverage the parallel architecture of the GPU to accelerate their research in the field of computational biophysics."
Other universities may be able to benefit from the same perks, too. According to Nvidia, a university can become a CUDA center of Excellence by teaching a CUDA class and using CUDA technology for research, "usually across several labs." Nvidia vows to support schools that do so with funding and equipment, "including help to set up a GPU computing cluster."
